Syncing is making what you have on itunes the same as whats on your phone. Also your phone has iCloud, which means it can sync over the air. If you put songs or movies or pictures from your laptop to your itunes and then sync it, it will send that stuff to your phone. It's the connection, between your phone and your laptop, and it's also the interface on which you manage your phone when it's plugged into your laptop.
